Also commemorated on this day are the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia - those Orthodox Christians who suffered and died during the yoke of Communism from 1917 to 1991. This commemoration follows the practice of the Russian Church on the Sunday closest to January 25, the date of the martyrdom of Metropolitan Vladimir of Kiev, the first hieromartyr under the Bolsheviks.
